“How bad is it?” Berry asked in bed that night, Spring asleep on the floor. The low ceiling fan, which would whack my head if I wasn’t careful, loomed, waiting to attack.

“Worse than ever. I know that your mom is a wonderful person. None of this is her fault. It’s all me.”

“Just try not to lash out, okay, like the last time?”

“Is freeze-dried okay?”

She rolled her eyes.

“Every fiber of my being will be focused on doing better,” I promised. “Golf with Allie will help.”

“It’s not easy for me either, you know,” she said.

“It’s horrible for you. I wish I could be human and help. Maybe more booze?”

“Well, being with her isn’t as bad as tomorrow will be, with your mom and dad.”

“Hey, tomorrow will be easy for me. No problems.”

“How’s that?”

“I’ll kill myself before we go.”
